Sailing in Stormy Weather
Our General
Meeting on Tuesday, July 25, brings back Meteorologist Bill Wilson and a follow up program
on last month's presentation on identifying approaching storms. No matter how well you can
predict the weather, chances are you are going to get caught in a storm on Lake Michigan.
What steps should you take to minimize storm damage and protect yourself and your crew?
What steps should you take to protect your boat from lightning? Bill, a meteorologist with
the National Weather Service in Romeoville, has many years of sailing experience. He will
go through a plan of action for storm safety. Don't miss this important meeting.
The meeting will be held at
the Burnham Park Yacht Club located at 1500 S. Lynn White Drive Follow the signs to Meigs
Field. Come early and enjoy dinner at the club beginning at 6:30 p.m. If you plan to have
dinner, please call the Yacht club at 312-427-4664 for reservations. Be certain to tell
them you are part of the Catalina group. The business meeting will begin promptly at 8:00
p.m.
MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE
One of the reasons we are
called a cruising club is because of the July two week cruise each year. It doesn't matter
if the boats go up the Wisconsin side of the lake or up the Michigan side; they all seem
to meet at Holland, Michigan, for the middle weekend. This will be the first time that
Francine and I have been a part of the cruise on our own boat and will get a taste of it
for one week. I am looking forward to buddy boating and having someone show me the way
into the new harbors. If you didn't make the cruise this year, keep it in mind for your
vacation next year. It is usually the 2nd and 3rd weeks in July.
By the time you read this, the
C30 Nationals will be history and everyone will be thanking Nick Thies and his committee
for a fine job. I'm hoping our boats will be the winners so they can brag at our next
general meeting July 25.
Hopefully, this month and next
month the sailing will be so good that we will have forgotten about May and June. Our
outings, so far, have had good attendance without boats. Let's focus on the next two
outings in August and make plans to show our boats off On August 5 & 6 we'll gather
for a rescheduled Polaroid Cruise and DuSable Harbor Outing details are in this
newsletter. On August 19 & 20 it's the great Hammond Symphony and Annual Pancake
Breakfast-more details on that outing next month. And, if the weather doesn't cooperate,
the outings will generally go on as scheduled and you should come by car if you cannot
sail.
I have a special request for
our boaters around Northpoint. Joe O'Conner is putting together a great Labor Day Weekend.
Please plan to join in the fun. A number of boats will be coming from Chicago and hope to
socialize with all the northern boats.
