Catalina Fleet 21 - Chicago
Region June 2006
NAUTICAL FLEA MARKET 6/22 The items pictured above are just a few of the treasures you’ll find at our upcoming nautical flea market and general meeting on Thursday, June 22, at the Burnham Park Yacht Club. This is your chance to clean out your basement, dock box, and car trunk of all those boating items you no longer need, never installed, or outgrew when you got a bigger boat. We’ll have table space for you to display your stuff on the patio of the yacht club. You set the prices and keep the proceeds! And of course you’ll be expected to buy someone else’s gizmos. You can start setting up your wares between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Enjoy dinner from a limited club menu. Around 8 p.m. we’ll convene our regular business meeting. The date of this meeting has been changed to Thursday, June 22. The Burnham Park Yacht Club is located at 1500 S. Linn White Drive. Follow the signs to the Museum Campus. If you plan to have dinner, please call the Yacht Club at 312-427-4664 for reservations. Tell them you are part of the Catalina group. It is crucial that you make reservations if you plan to have dinner. No general meeting in July. OUTINGS Be sure to check the updated outings schedule and flyers inside this newsletter. Yet to come this month is a newly added Photo Op at Montrose on the 17th, the Red Witch cruise on the 23rd, and the Jackson Park party on the 24th. July 1 is the first of several departure dates for those lucky enough to be going on the Door County Cruise. It’s not too late to sign on for this adventure. Check the Fleet website at http://www.catfleet21.org for all the details or contact Bob Kuba at 773-327-9331. Fleet member Phil Klein is looking for crew to enable him to join the Door County group part of the way. First Mate (MJ) will be out of the country the first week of July and he’d like to take EASY TOO as far as Port Washington and then sail back to return to Chicago by the evening of 7/5. Anybody interested? He needs a minimum of 2 experienced crewmembers since the return sail will probably involve night sailing. Contact Phil at 847-673-0518. Wherever you sail this summer you’re never far away from a fellow Fleet 21 member! Fair winds! Upcoming Outings Shipwreck Party on Gilligan's Island Actually it’s Jackson Park Yacht Club! Fleet Member PhilL Klein will be taking boat photos at Montrose Harbor on Saturday, June 17 A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMODORE The Fleet Margarita Party was a great kick-off to our season outings thanks to the extraordinary efforts of Lorelei Lauraitis, Pat Shereyk and Carolyn DeAre, not to mention the many people behind the scenes and members who brought culinary delights to share. I saw a lot of familiar faces and many new faces in the crowd of over 50. What a great day to catch up on old times, meet new friends and members, talk about the season before us and of course tell a few old war stories of seasons past. Welcome to new members Mike & Barb Brennan who joined our Fleet at the party and took advantage of a free Fleet Cap. Linda Kleitz put together a great themed basket for our raffle that was won by Arnie & Beverly Hollander and Cheryl Kuba picked up a gift certificate from Café Ba Ba Reba that was won by Burnham Harbor Captains Bill and Mickey Thompson. Thanks to Brian Ruxton and Carolyn Glenn for getting our new Fleet logo caps in time for the party. These caps will be available at outings throughout the year for $15. For additional personalized items with our Fleet Logo, please visit our website. Carolyn can add our logo to any item you supply: shirts, towels, bags, etc.. Call her for pricing and details (847-251-3443). Thanks to Ted Kuenzil for putting together and distributing our membership directory to those in attendance. This saved the Fleet postage on the ones that were picked up and many people took advantage of the $2 offer for additional directories. There were also a few in the group that braved the heat and early hour to take part in the Bike the Drive Fund raiser at 6:30 the next morning and of course many sailors fighting the flies and forecasted thunderstorms to enjoy some time on the water. The Outing and Program Chairs and their crews are continuing event planning to add to the many events already underway. Please keep checking our website for postings of future events and programs and more importantly the Fleet Sheet for more timely notices. We still have a few spots available on the Red Witch Cruise on June 23 and it is rumored that we will have a great guitar player on board, so those that are musically inclined, bring your instruments and share your talents with all. There will also be a raffle of the “The Wake of the Red Witch” starring John Wayne and Gail Russell. Contact Lorelei Lauraitis for details and tickets. Richard “Rick” Roberts Commodore
