SEE SAILS SEWN
We would all be power boaters if not for the fine art of sailmaking. Come
and see how a sail is manufactured today as the Fleet holds its April
General Meeting at UK’s Chicago Sail Loft on Tuesday, April 18.
UK-Halsey Chicago is a full production and repair facility located at 2323
S. Michigan Avenue. Our private tour of their facilities will include a walk
through of the entire process of making a sail. And this is the time to get
all your sail-related questions answered. What fabrics are out there and
what’s best for cruising or racing? How can you tell when a sail needs to be
replaced? How long should a sail last? What’s involved in converting to a
roller-furling main?
We’ll meet at the sail loft at 7:00 p.m. There is plenty of safe on street
parking. After our tour and a question and answer period (maybe around 8:30
p.m.), we’ll adjourn to Connie’s Pizza for a group dinner. Connie’s is
located at 2372 S. Archer Avenue.
Next month we’ll take another field trip—this time to the new Chicago Coast
Guard station. That meeting is scheduled for May 16. Mark your calendars
now.
A MESSAGE FROM THE
COMMODORE
The Commodore is on vacation. I’m going away this weekend…so in order to get
you the newsletter in time for you to attend the April 18 meeting we are
going to press without the Commodore’s message. Maybe next month’s message
will be twice as long!
You don’t need the Commodore to tell you that the sailing season is coming!
Our Outings Committee is working on a calendar of fun activities. They need
your help with ideas and they need people to step forward and say they will
sponsor an outing at their harbor. Here’s what’s happening so far. If you
don’t see anything on the calendar for your harbor, call the committee
today.

HARBOR NEWS
WesTrec’s contract with the Chicago Park District
was extended for one more year. Waiting lists for transfers and more than
700 new applicants make it important for you to pay fees on time or risk
losing your slip. Sanitation inspections will be performed
as last year.
RACING
Spend an afternoon racing and help a good cause.
Chicago’s Leukemia Cup is Saturday, August 26.
This annual fund -raising event includes racers of all types including
Cruising sailors. We have the opportunity to have our own Fleet start in
this race if we have enough interest. The entry fee which goes to the fight
against leukemia is $50. Racing begins around 1:30 p.m. and ends around 3:30
p.m. Get your crew together and “let’s go racing!” For additional
information or to sign up, contact racing chairman David Green at
sailingmates@yahoo.com or
at 219-988-2348.
