Author To Speak
Head down to Columbia Yacht Club on the evening of August 18 to hear
former Fleet Member turned author Ken Ebner. Ebner, who now lives in
Florida is the author of Boating Tips Better Ways to Float Your Boat:
Practical Ways to Improve, Operate and Maintain Your Cruising Boat.
Ebner’s book is described as “ a great ,easy to read and understand
publication, for the apprentice to the accomplished boater. It covers
the technical and practical problems experienced by both the sailor and
power boater.” Ebner will share many of his tips with us and also relate
some of his sailing adventures.
The meeting is at the Columbia Yacht Club which is located in the ship
between Monroe and DuSable Harbors.
As far as parking goes, the Field Harbor Parking Lot we originally
recommended, is no longer available; it went condo July 1st and no
longer accepts daily parkers. We now recommend the DuSable Harbor lot;
the entrance is beyond the Columbia member lot, but, if you drive back
to Randolph to park, you can actually park closer than some of the
Columbia member spaces. There are no stairs or ramps involved. The cost
is $13 per day or evening. You may want to check the "Directions" link
on www.columbiayachtclub.com where any future changes in options will be
noted.
Cheaper parking may be available in the Grant/Millennium Park
underground lots (entrance on Columbus). You can park by the upper level
Randolph exit; stairs are involved to exit the parking lot and again to
get to middle level Randolph. Then the walk to Columbia is a block or
two longer than the old Field Harbor option.
Enjoy dinner at Columbia beginning at 6:30 p.m. Make a reservation by
calling 312-938-3625. Tell them you are with the Catalina group. By 8:00
make your way to the meeting which we think will be on the first floor
as you come in.
A MESSAGE FROM THE
COMMODORE
Well we have had a great summer for sailing so far! I appreciate the
great turnout we have been having at all the outings this year. The July
outings were great! My compliments to our hosts the Michigan City
Dockers and the Hammond P Dock Party Planners. Fantastic get togethers!
And if some of you haven't had a chance to sail to an outing yet, don't
fret, we still have more. Join us this month for the North Point
Venetian Night outing the weekend of 8/13, and the Montrose Tour-de-Boat
on 8/27. Should be a lot of fun, hope to see you there!
And make plans to join our General Meeting, Thursday 8/18 at Columbia
Yacht Club. Our guest speaker will be Ken Ebner, a former Chicago Fleet
21 member, now residing in Florida. Come hear Ken speak on practical
boating tips for serious cruising, including excerpts from his book, A
Better Way to Float Your Boat: Practical Ways to Improve, Operate and
Maintain Your Cruising Boat. Following the meeting, we will have a short
book signing opportunity. Come out and welcome the Ebners back on their
visit to Chicago. Also, please remember to call the club at least 24
hours ahead for reservations if you will be having dinner at Columbia.
Also, our Vice Commodore, Rick Roberts is leading a committee to develop
a slate of officer candidates for our 2006 Fleet 21 year. If you would
like to learn more about the officers' roles, or want to nominate
someone, please call or email Rick. We appreciate all the help we have
received this year, and need all your support , so give Rick a call, you
will be glad you did!
Well, that is all for now. Barb and I are leaving tomorrow for our "week
away from sailing"; otherwise known as a bike ride across Wisconsin. I
hope to see you all on the water when we get back.
Terry Ries,
Cap'n Parrot Eyes
OUTINGS RECAP
Hammond Outing/July 29-31
The weather was great and the turnout was super. The Peorgi Fest parade
was interesting and the food was plentiful. The Hammond Outing is now
over and everyone who sailed, drove or moors in Hammond had a great
weekend. The following boats sailed over with good winds both days:
Black Angel, Summer Mink, Sea Horse, Quiet Island, Fast Tack, Parrot
Eyes, Pivot Point, Allegro, Bill's Michael-een, Mission Accomplished and
The Lupi. Maris drove over and the Hammond boats were: Weak Moment, Wind
Dancer, Ultimate 19th Hole, Bleed'n Green, Baysic Necessity, Bearoness,
Karizmaddie and Finesse. All the boats were able to moor on P dock,
except our fine Commodore. Sorry about that Terry. We also had one of
our fleet sponsor's from Texas in - Zarcor (John Halter). Thanks to the
P dock gang for working hard to make the weekend enjoyable.
